We carry briar pipes from Peterson of Ireland; Lorenzetti, Vincenzo, Savinelli of Italy; Brigham of Canada; Stokkebye of Denmark and Comoy of England. We also sell Missouri Meerschaum corncob pipes made only in Washington, Missouri. Prices range from $30 to $280.
Most pipes today are made from briar wood cut from the root burl of the tree
heath (Erica arborea), a plant growing in the rocky and sandy soils around the
Mediterranean. It has a natural resistance to fire and also is able to absorb
moisture- a by-product of combustion, making it a good vessel for holding fire.
Italy and France probably produce the most briar pipes. Denmark also produces
many fine pipes.
